Aisles of Smiles 2006 On December 14th, the Surprise Firefighters Charities in conjunction with the Dysart School District, Sun City Rotary Club, Papa John’s Pizza, Happy Trails Community and Target, held their first annual "Aisles of Smiles" event. Randy Frassetto, President of the Surprise Firefighter’s Charities, Forrest Koontz and Tom Flores made arrangements for a Holiday shopping spree for local school children.
A total of 70 underprivileged students from the Dysart Unified School District took part in the shopping event and afterwards they were treated to a pizza party back at their school.
"The firefighters and volunteers were smiling just as much as the kids," says Surprise Fire Captain Randy Frassetto. "This event is something firefighters love to participate in! It is a great way for firefighters to show support for their community by volunteering their time and donating their own money to help these underprivileged children have a special holiday!”
Each child was provided with a bus ride to the Surprise Target store, and was presented with $50 cash to buy a gift for themselves. Every child was chaperoned with firefighters and other volunteers for assistance.
"The kids bought bikes, remote-controlled cars, and anything from clothes to Barbie dolls and craft kits," adds Frasetto. Surprise Firefighter Espinoza, a new fire academy graduate who just started working in the field this week, was especially touched when a young girl had trouble making a decision between a backpack for school or a toy for herself. Espinoza talked her into the toy and then surprised her at the cash register when he purchased the backpack for her out of his own pocket.
MDA Summer Camp 2007 Surprise Fire Fighters Tom Flores (pictured) and Michael Bennie took time out this summer to volunteer for the MDA Summer Camp. Surprise Fire Fighters participated in "Fill the Boot" and collected $4434.95. Members collected over $300 more than last years total. The funds collected will be passed on at the Labor Day Telethon this year. Be sure to tune in and support MDA !
